For 2008/09 the Mike Wooding Memorial Trophy a nominated award given to an individual hiker or support volunteer who typifies Mike’s love for the challenge of the Fellsman and who has performed something exceptional and noteworthy during the event, was awarded to Jim Drummond who was nominated by a number of his fellow hikers. The list of Jim’s qualities are too many to mention here, but all of the people who nominated him spoke of how he goes out of his way to take less experienced hikers under his wing, giving both his time and the benefit of his experience to help them round the route. This is particularly important in the hours of darkness during the period of grouping which, as we all know, can be a stressful time when morale is at its lowest. Jim’s encouragement has meant the difference between finishing and retiring for more than one hiker.
