The 55th Fellsman 2017…

Well, we find ourselves bringing another Fellsman year to a close, which once again seems to have come round stupidly fast… With the end of one year comes the traditional last meeting of the committee where the ‘Lick and stick’ (as it is traditionally known) takes place and envelopes are filled with the hallowed punched tallies and certificates to return to entrants; these are now in the post and should be with you shortly.

And so begins the start of another Fellsman year! The committee traditionally allow ourselves a month off before work starts in earnest preparing for the next event but as we know we are all busy people, we thought it best to give you all as much advance notice of the provisional Fellsman date for 2017: Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April.

We know that this is Bank Holiday weekend and feel we must explain the reasons for our choice (which are not to do with having the Monday off work although that will be a definite bonus!). As many of you know, various land management agencies operating in the area forbid us to cross their land between May and the beginning of October as this is ground-nesting bird season and they do not want the birds and nests disturbing. This limits us to holding the event between October and April. Most of the remaining months are not options due to shortened daylight and poor weather and so we have few weekends to choose from. Add to this that Easter interferes (the weekend of 15th / 16th April) and that, as a Scouting organisation, we cannot hold the Fellsman on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd as it is St George’s Day (one of the most important events in the Scouting calendar) and we’re pretty much left with the weekend we’ve chosen. So, we really hope that you will be able to work something out to join us on a hopefully sunny weekend in April to take part in the 55th Fellsman.

So for now, the current committee would like to sincerely thank you for your attendance / hard work / support of our event. The new committee will form at the July meeting from which point planning will begin in earnest for the event we all know and love….

Suzanne Carter, Event Organiser 2016.

We have a cunning plan…

As I type, the committee are in the throes of planning the 53rd Fellsman, which will take place on 25th/26th April 2015…

For those of you keen to give your cheque book it’s annual airing – Wait!! This year we are planning on the majority of entries being online following the successful integration of the online entry system over the last couple of years, and these entries will open on 1st January 2015, at 20:15…  A pdf of the entry form will be available by request (by email or by post) for those who wish/need to enter by post, and these entries will be processed from 2nd January (when access to the P.O.Box opens!)

In the meantime, we will be putting the handbook together and are looking for content – do you have any photos from last year?  Would you like to write an article?  Could you put in an advert? If the answer to any of these is Yes! get in touch as soon as possible, the deadline for all content is the end of October.

Finally may we take this opportunity to remind you all of the Mike Wooding Memorial Trophy – a nominated award given to an individual entrant or support volunteer who typifies Mike’s love for the challenge of the Fellsman and who has performed something exceptional and noteworthy during the event.  This award is done retrospectively, so we are looking for nominations for the 2014 event.  If you know someone who you think fits this description, drop us an email or use the contact form on this website.

In the meantime keep spreading the word (our best form of advertisement!), look out for us on facebook and twitter, and if you have any suggestions or comments on the event please don’t hesitate to get in touch – we look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you!

The committee (who are, as this is being written, sat discussing this year’s event at the annual Debrief) would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who took part in the 2014 event.  Checkpoint staff, catering staff, medical staff, van drivers, scouts, and not least of all – Entrants.  Without you all, there wouldn’t be an event to discuss!  We are also stuffing envelopes with tallies and certificates, which will be in the post by the end of this weekend.  If you haven’t had yours by 1st June, get in touch.

Lost property is still being collated, and as soon as it’s all in one place, photos will be posted on here and on our facebook pages.  Any email enquires  relating to lost property will be answered soon, and if you have anything that’s likely lost property, let us know and we will try to return it to its owner.

The Fellsman Shop will stop taking orders on the 1st of August, so if you are intending to post in an order, we suggest you post it no later than the 12th of July.  Any orders received after 31st July will not be processed until January.

We have taken on board all your post event comments, the vast majority of which are  incredibly positive, and are already on with the 53rd Fellsman, which is intended to take place on the weekend of 25th/26th April 2015.  Entries will open as usual on 1st of January, and hopefully this will be primarily online, so keep an eye on the website in December for more details…  Until then, the committee will be taking their annual ‘holiday’ (which in most cases involves work/other hobbies/organising other stuff!) so please be aware that there may be a delay in responding to any correspondence.

Finally, we hope you have all recovered sufficiently, and are only left with good memories of the event.  Please spread the word, and if you know of anyone who would like to help, or can help us publicise the event, let us know.  We wish you all well, and look forward to seeing you next year 🙂

A Quick Update…

With the ‘One Week to go’ mark looming, here’s a quick round up of information that may help in the mean time..

  • Maps can be bought in the On-line Entries section, under ‘Adding extras to an existing entry’.  Orders for these will be taken until Sunday 20th April, after which time they will only be available on the weekend itself in our shop at Threshfield on the Friday evening and from Saturday afternoon onwards, and at the start in Ingleton on Saturday morning.  (Transport, Friday supper and Saturday Breakfast can be purchased here too if you have forgotten, or your plans have changed.)
  • Clothing orders taken now will not be processed until after the event – we get everything done to order, so nothing would be ready in time for the event – a bulk order will be put in straight after the event.  Order forms will be in the shop, and any items in stock can be purchased then also.
  • If you think you have entered but have not received a handbook through the post, get in touch – a couple seem to have gone missing in the post.

And finally, if you have a place on the event but know you are not going to be able to make it (for whatever reason), please let us know. Our aim is (one of these years!) to have 500 people start the event, so at least if we know in advance then we can try fill the places.  Similarly, if you are still trying to decide whether to enter, we have a few places left, and will be accepting entries (as spare places allow) on the day at the start.

If you have any questions, please get in touch.  We try to answer as quickly as possible, but bear with us, as it’s very busy here in Fellsman land at the moment!

Handbook Gremlins Strike Again…

With just under 5 weeks to go, we have discovered a couple of handbook glitches. Whilst we make every effort to ensure all the information in the handbook is correct, mistakes are inevitable. We really thought we had it pinned this year, but it would appear not. So, to clarify a few points…

The start time is 8.30am. Yes, it does say 9am at the top of page 27, but this an oversight – all other references say 8.30am. We apologise for missing one, and any confusion this may have caused.

Grid references for Hells Gap and Middle Tongue. As several of you have pointed out, the ones in the main checkpoint list on page 29 of the handbook are indeed incorrect. The correct ones are on the Fellsman map, and in the ‘Points to Observe on Route’ section on page 31 of the handbook. These are – Hells Gap 936818 and Middle Tongue 906803.

Fortunately they seem to be the only areas the Gremlins have got to. So, if you are reading this and have friends who are also doing the event, please spread the word.

Finally, for those of you wondering about the grouping and/or chop times, the information given in the handbook is indeed correct, and the website has been amended. The grouping times are the same as last year, as these are daylight dependant, and the chop times have been brought forward 30 minutes in line with the earlier start time.

If you are reading this and wondering whether to enter – Just Do It! We have a few places left, and the unfortunate but predictable trickle of injury-based withdrawals has begun, and we’d love nothing better than to start the event with a full field.

Last of all, a few of us were up in the Dales visiting some of the farmers this weekend, and whilst cold, the views were stunning. There’s a little snow on the higher ground, but nothing major, and what’s there will not last long. The ground is currently very soft, fingers crossed it dries out a bit in the next few weeks…
