2022 – The Fellsman is back and entries are open!

It’s New Year’s Day again. In 2020 when entries opened we said that it hadn’t felt like a year. Well, the 2020 and 2021 events were curtailed by a pesky virus and I think we can all agree the last two years have felt like an eternity. However, it’s 2022 and despite Omicron rearing its ugly head we are going ahead with the 58th Fellsman. Third time lucky… *fingers crossed*

The entries for the 58th Fellsman on the 30th April and 1st May 2022 are now open.  You can access the online entries system from the Online Entries tab at the top or following this link. Hopefully you’ll not all rush at once, our email system really doesn’t like it!

The entry fee this year is £75, which is an increase on 2020, but which we believe is still fantastic value for such an event. This increase reflects a number of cost implications associated with our 2 year hiatus such as replacement of all our first aid consumables as they are now out of date, not to mention core food stocks which also need to be completely replaced. It also takes into account the expected increase in both fuel and food bills following the price rises of these items over the past year. However, the largest single thing increasing the cost is our decision to hire GPS trackers for the event. These will be used for safety purposes and will give spectators the chance to track your progress in real time. This does not mean we are getting rid of the tally (which would be a crime) or Felltrack which will still be used to log your progress through checkpoints and provide your official time. The introduction of trackers has also meant that we are reviewing the need for grouping and the rules relating to this. This will be finalised at our January meeting, however currently the plan is to remove the mandatory requirement for grouping during the hours of darkness (although less experienced entrants would be encouraged to walk in groups for safety given the terrain). In the event of severely deteriorating weather, the committee would retain the right to consider introducing a requirement preventing entrants continuing unaccompanied from a checkpoint.

On the plus side, all extras – transport, meals, maps – remain at 2019 prices.

We’ve also made a change to accommodation. In order to allow the event to run safely, the decision has been made to not offer accommodation in the school hall as in previous years. Instead, we have secured the use of an adjacent field in which to camp free of charge. Toilet facilities will be provided, and showers will be available to use in the school as before. No parking is permitted within the camping field; parking is limited to the entrants’ car park at Threshfield Old Quarry. A free shuttle bus operates between the car park and the school. Camper vans can be accommodated in the Threshfield Old Quarry car park as before, where toilet facilities will also be available.

When you enter, you will receive 2 emails – one from us, with a copy of your submitted entry form, and one from PayPal confirming your payment.  These are your confirmation of entry.  Here’s where it will change slightly for 2022 – we need to recap about the Handbook…

Usually, we send out handbooks by the end of March, individually labelled with your entrant number.  We leave it later and later each year to order them, in an attempt to not have too many left over after the event, but every year we have loads.  So, in 2020 we decided to take a different approach and will finally be implementing this in 2022.

On the entry form, you will find a tick box to request a hard copy of the Handbook  if you really want one,  which you will be able to collect at registration.  We will publish all the useful / relevant information on the website before the event.  This way, we can get an accurate number printed just before the event, hopefully cut down on wastage, and maybe save a tree. As a group, we are constantly looking at ways to be more environmentally friendly, and cut down on single use plastics etc., so we hope you will understand!

When entering, don’t forget to order and pay for any extras you will need.  These, along with the entry fee, will need adding to your PayPal basket before checking out.  If you forget anything, you can pay for them before the event by following the Adding Extras to An Existing Entry tab at the top of the page.  Maps are available to purchase through the same link, but the rest of the shop is currently closed. We hope to have it back up and running closer to the event.

The land use restrictions from 2019 are still in place, and the post pinned to the news carousel reminds you of all the details for this.  All in all, it worked well and solved a problem, so we see no point in changing it for now.

I think that’s it for now.  We look forward to processing your entries in due course.  If you have any queries,  please email us using the contact form, and we’ll answer as soon as we can.

Our very best wishes for 2022,
The Fellsman Committee
